Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I want to take a moment to welcome you and your children back to the 2021-22 school year!  Our staff returned today and participated in our annual convocation, which celebrated our staff and focused on building and sustaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive school environment for all learners.  This morning we recognized NHS special education teacher, Jill Gonski, as Newtown’s Teacher of the Year, and Dorothy Kelly, our Paraeducator of the Year.  We also welcomed more than 30 new teachers into our school district who are excited to be working with students and members of our community.

We know there are still challenges ahead due to COVID, but we are all anxious for students to return and have worked hard to ensure our classrooms and buildings provide optimal space for safe, in-person learning. All staff and leaders are prepared to implement health safety protocols, including the appropriate use of masks, hand washing, and maximizing space in accordance with State DPH guidelines. While some mitigation strategies will need to remain in place as we begin the new year, we will be working hard to establish frequent outdoor activities, mask breaks, and other practices to help your child navigate the school day.

Our experience over the last 18 months has also helped us utilize technology in new ways as instructional tools both in and beyond the classroom.  If students need to quarantine, they will have access to instructional activities and assignments through Google Classroom and Seesaw, as well as be assigned a qualified teacher/mentor to support them in completing work.  Other information about the school year is outlined in our Return to School Plan located on our website, and district administrators will continue to share pertinent information with you as needed.

As we do every year, bus routes are posted on our website.  We want to remind all parents that every student boarding our buses will be required to wear a mask while traveling to and from school and in all school buildings per the Governor’s Executive Order 13A.  Please understand that safety is our top priority, and we will be working closely with our local health director to monitor our local health metrics throughout the year.

Many families have shared an intent to drive their students to school.  The times and protocols for parent drop off and pick up from each of our school campuses will be communicated by principals.  The increase in parents driving to and from our campuses will likely increase traffic. We ask for your patience and support in allowing our students and staff to arrive and depart safely from our schools.

On a final note, best wishes for a wonderful new school year.  We want nothing more than to be back with our students so they can have a productive year that sparks their interests, piques their curiosity, provides a multitude of academic pathways, and addresses their learning needs.  All staff and leaders of Newtown Public Schools look forward to welcoming your children back into buildings and working in partnership with you as caregivers.
