School Resource Officers
The Newtown Police Department is committed to providing comprehensive police services to our community, which includes ensuring the safety and security of our schools. To this end, the Youth Bureau assigns School Resource Officers (SROs) to serve as liaisons between the police department and our educational institutions, with dedicated officers at the Middle School and High School.
The primary responsibilities of our SROs are multifaceted:
- Law Enforcement: Proactively addressing safety and security concerns to foster a secure learning environment for students and staff.
- Law-Related Counseling: Providing guidance and support to students on legal issues and facilitating connections to relevant internal and external resources.
- Law-Related Education: Serving as an additional educational resource by sharing their expertise in law enforcement within the classroom setting.
The presence of our School Resource Officers in our middle and high schools provides an important layer of support for our students and staff. These officers are valuable members of our school communities.
